Alto saxophonist Travis Sullivan unleashes a different sound and turns everything loose on his 2011 record "New Directions." Known primarily for leading his Björkestra project, Sullivan decides that less is definitely more when he focuses his full attention on this quartet date. He is joined by pianist Mike Eckroth, bassist Marco Panascia, and drummer Brian Fishler. With a balanced program of Sullivan’s new compositions and a few tasty arrangements of some classics of yesterday thrown in for good measure, the entire session is hard hitting with exciting rhythms and melodic lyricism.
