Brandon Wright
“The thing that impresses me the most about Brandon is his respect for tradition and his desire to find his voice based on the legacy and the wisdom that has been left to us by the historically acknowledged masters of modern jazz. That, in itself, is something rather unusual for the young ‘up-and-comers’ today, and I believe it is what ultimately will propel him to great heights and separate him from his peers in this music. He is the real deal!” — Eric Alexander
Saxophonist Brandon Wright is regarded by both elders and peers as a vital emerging voice on the New York jazz scene. His second album, Journeyman (Posi-Tone, 2012), showcases his compositional creativity and engaging leadership, continuing the artistic growth first evident on his debut Boiling Point (Posi-Tone, 2010), which revealed a maturity beyond his years.
Brandon frequently leads his own quartet across the East Coast, appearing at venues such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, The Kitano Hotel, Smalls Jazz Club, Smoke, Zinc Bar, Trumpets, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Originally from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, Brandon studied at the University of Michigan and the University of Miami, where he won the 2004 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition and was selected for the 2005 Henry Mancini Institute. Since then, he has performed with the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, Mingus Big Band/Dynasty/Orchestra, Chico O’Farrill Latin Big Band, John Fedchock New York Big Band, Doc Severinsen, Fred Wesley, and Tony Bennett. More recently, Brandon has toured internationally with Chuck Mangione’s working group and Max Weinberg’s Big Band.
