Trombonist David Gibson's newest recording is titled Inner Agent (2016), his forth for Posi-Tone. It’s a continuation of ideas and expressions forged on BOOM! (2015) with a band of some of the best young talent on today’s New York area scene. Gibson searches the voices within himself to discover his bliss and shows a renewed sense of purpose.
Gibson has enjoyed a wide-ranging musical career which is deeply rooted in the genres of jazz and funk. While reared in Oklahoma, Gibson’s musical journey steered him to New York City, where he has performed with legends like Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, and James Moody. In 2003, he was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Trombone Competition and soon after, began releasing several critically acclaimed recordings as a leader, as well as performing as a side man on many other recordings.
Gibson stays busy performing with and composing for many diverse artists around the world, including the George Gee Swing Orchestra, Roy Hargrove, Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band, and Nickel, in addition to leading his own groups, continuous small group sideman work and teaching at SUNY Geneseo and Columbia University.
