Jacám Manricks
On the eve of his fourth release as a leader (Cloud Nine, Posi-Tone 2012), Jacám Manricks is being recognized as one of the most qualified musical artists in the world today, and continues touring as a featured soloist, composer/arranger, and clinician throughout Europe, North America, and his native Australia. His jazz records have received praise from critics around the world from every major publication. With each release, Manricks has grown into a leading voice for today’s younger generation of saxophone players. From his first release, Sky’s The Limit, through his next releases Labyrinth and Trigonometry, Jacám has displayed his outstanding compositional skills and exquisite musicianship, along with some of the best jazz musicians on the scene.
Manricks’ latest record is titled Cloud Nine. It’s an exciting new album of original compositions, with two reinterpretations, and features the collective musical talents of Manricks on alto saxophone, along with guitarist Adam Rogers, trumpeter David Weiss, organist Sam Yahel, and drummer Matt Wilson. This stellar lineup of household jazz names really makes Manricks’ music come to life.
Compositionally, Manricks has been featured by many big bands in New York, Europe, and Australia. These include a Suite for Symphony Orchestra and Big Band, which was premiered as a part of the Manhattan School of Music’s 90th Anniversary Celebration Concert in New York in October 2007. He has written and/or conducted other works for the William Patterson University Big Band (New Jersey, USA), the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra (New York, USA), The Mothership Jazz Orchestra (Sydney, Australia), numerous ensembles at the Helsinki Polytechnics Pop and Jazz Conservatory (Finland), the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo (Norway, 2010), and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Brisbane, Australia).
As an educator, Manricks has given master-classes and lectures on improvisation, jazz saxophone, jazz composition, and arranging at some of the leading music institutes in the world. Manricks earned one of the first Doctorates in Musical Arts Degree (DMA) from the Manhattan School of Music, a Masters Degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging, and a Bachelor Degree in Music Performance. When not playing in the New York area clubs or touring the world, Manricks can be found teaching jazz saxophone and improvisation for the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.
