Jocelyn Gould
Jocelyn Gould is an accomplished guitarist and bandleader. Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, Jocelyn grew up in a musical family and spent her formative years as a vocalist, singing any chance she got. As a teenager, she became enthralled with the guitar and hasn’t put the instrument down since. After completing her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Manitoba, Jocelyn relocated to Michigan in an attempt to surround herself with the music that she loves. While completing her masters degree at Michigan State University, Jocelyn began to develop her sound and musical values of swing, blues, soul, attitude, and groove. Mentored by acclaimed guitarist Randy Napoleon, Jocelyn studied the guitar playing of Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell and Joe Pass.
Upon graduating, Gould relocated to New York City and developed a profile that has taken her to international festivals—such as the St. Lucia, Detroit, and Toronto Jazz Festivals—and renowned jazz clubs. In 2018, Jocelyn won 1st place in the Wilson Center International Jazz Guitar Competition, and held the guitar chair in the inaugural season of “The Gathering,” a big band directed by Rodney Whitaker in memory of the late Geri Allen. Gould is featured on recent recordings by Michael Dease, Diego Rivera and Randy Napoleon. She has performed internationally in the groups of Grammy nominated vocalist/pianist Freddy Cole, trumpeter Etienne Charles and trombonist Michael Dease, to name a few. In 2019, Jocelyn became endorsed by Benedetto, one of the premier archtop guitar companies.
In September 2019, Jocelyn began a professorship as head of the guitar department at Humber College in Toronto, which is home to Canada’s largest and well known guitar department. In addition to her active performance career, Jocelyn is passionate as an educator and has been a guest clinician in universities and colleges across North America, including Broward College in Florida and her alma mater, the University of Manitoba.
Gould’s debut album is Elegant Traveler (Posi-Tone 2020) and features pianist Addison Frei, bassist George DeLancey, drummer Quincy Davis, and the horn players Michael Dease, Brandon Wright and Anthony Stanko.
Jocelyn is active touring, including a 2020 Canadian Jazz Festivals tour. In the fall of 2020, she will be joining the lineup of “International Guitar Night” for their European and North American Tours. This is a tour that features four guitarists performing solo guitar sets.
