Lauren Sevian
Baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian stands among the most in-demand and versatile musicians on the modern jazz scene. Her latest Posi-Tone release, Bliss (2018), showcases her commanding sound and expressive voice as a composer. Backed by an all-star rhythm section — pianist Robert Rodriguez, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer E.J. Strickland — with alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino guesting on three tracks, Sevian delivers a set of original compositions inspired by themes of love and emotion.
Sevian’s musical path began at age 12 on piano before switching to saxophone. By 16, she had won the Count Basie Invitational Soloing Competition, earning a feature performance with the Count Basie Orchestra. At 17, she was already performing at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Village Vanguard. After moving to New York City in 1997 to attend the Manhattan School of Music, Sevian quickly began touring with groups such as DIVA and the Artie Shaw Orchestra.
As a leader, Sevian performs regularly with the LSQ (Lauren Sevian Quartet) and LSAT, her co-led quintet with Alexa Tarantino. As a sidemusician, she is a member of the Mingus Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, Christian McBride’s Big Band, Robin Eubanks Big Band, and the legendary Count Basie Orchestra.
A dedicated educator, Sevian serves on faculty at Jazz at Lincoln Center, directing the Young Women’s Jazz Orchestra and teaching in the Middle School Jazz Academy. She has appeared as a guest artist at universities, schools, and festivals worldwide, and has adjudicated major competitions including Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington and the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Festival.
Sevian is a proud endorser of Buffet-Crampon saxophones, Rico Reeds (D’Addario), RPC mouthpieces, and BG France accessories.
