Out To Dinner
The fourth release in the Out To Dinner series, Food Is Medicine continues to expand the musical message with ambition and subtlety. Each album in this series broadens the aesthetic sensibilities of its audience, and this companion piece to Episodes of Grace (released earlier the same year) showcases the combined talents of five outstanding composer-bandleaders.
The album delivers a rich sonic prescription featuring vibraphonist Behn Gillece, trombonist Ryan Keberle, and saxophonist Patrick Cornelius weaving freely over the harmonic foundation laid by bassist Boris Kozlov and the dynamic rhythms of drummer Rudy Royston. This adventurous and focused music encourages jazz listeners to enrich their musical diet with these vibrant, “different flavors.”
Patrick Cornelius – A familiar figure to Posi-Tone fans, alto saxophonist and composer Cornelius contributes two original pieces, “Waiting For Takeoff” and “We Dare.” His passionate tone and compositional depth bring a distinct flavor to the ensemble’s sound.
Behn Gillece – Vibraphonist Gillece has established himself over more than a decade on the New York jazz scene as a virtuosic player and prolific composer. Winner of the DownBeat Rising Star award for vibraphone, Gillece shines as both a leader and valued sideman, deeply committed to the expressive beauty of the vibraphone.
Ryan Keberle – A new addition to Posi-Tone and winner of the 2021 JazzTimes Critics’ Poll for trombone, Keberle brings his rich experience and adventurous voice to the project. His two compositions, “The Slope Of The Blues” and “Sisters Of Mine,” are highlights of this recording.
Boris Kozlov – A veteran bassist celebrated for leading the Mingus bands and collaborating with jazz luminaries worldwide, Kozlov builds a solid harmonic foundation and adds nuanced textures. This year marks his premiere as a leader on Posi-Tone with First Things First. His compositions “Dinner Is Served” and “After KW” are featured on this album.
Rudy Royston – One of the most in-demand drummers on today’s scene, Royston’s powerful creativity and rhythmic mastery enhance every session. He maintains steady roles with artists such as Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell, Chico Freeman, Linda May Han Oh, and Jon Irabagon.
Together, this ensemble serves up a feast of fresh, innovative jazz that nourishes the listener with its rich blend of musical ingredients.
